Hoosier Feeder Partners with New Castle Career Center

High school students looking to get a head start on their career can now enroll in courses through the New Castle Career Center (NCCC) at New Castle High School. Seventeen programs are currently available to juniors and seniors interested in machine trades, including feeder systems. The program is an incredible opportunity for students who want to gain first-hand knowledge of the machine trades industry. In the past 5 years, employers have contacted NCCC regularly seeking potential employees with training in machine trades.

Hoosier Feeder Company is a partner in the program, which has already resulted in considerable success. More than 68 percent of enrollees go on to attend post-secondary educational opportunities. Approximately 99 percent of enrollees gain the technical skills required for entry level jobs – all before setting foot in a college classroom. Since the program’s inception, students each year have earned more than 2500 dual credits.

Machine Trades through the career center is a hands-on program where students use math skills to solve problems and machine projects. To be prepared, students are encouraged to focus on doing well in algebra and geometry courses. Admission into apprenticeship programs and specialty training programs can be competitive. To increase their chances, students must focus on doing their best work in all high school courses and working toward a Technical Honors Diploma.

Sam Tollett, a graduate of the program, said he jumped on the chance to learn machine trades with Hoosier Feeder Company. “The program gave me the opportunity to learn and get a jumpstart on my career. I also received excellent work experience before heading into the labor force.”

Tollett said Hoosier Feeder was different from some of the other machine trade shops he visited. “Many were either strictly machine or strictly fabrication,” he said. “Hoosier Feeder is a combination of both. I knew I wanted to work there after graduation.”
